India Wireless Telecom Market December 2011 – Idea displaced Reliance to grab No.3 position while Maharashtra retained its top position

India mobile subscriber base touched 893.84 million in at the end of December 2011 …
·    Indian wireless telecom market ends December 2011 with subscriber base of 893.84 million compared with 752.19 million in December 2010, a growth of 18.83%
·    Overall mobile teledensity stands at 74.15% (Urban – 161.01%, Rural – 36.56%) in December 2011
·    Urban to rural subscriber ratio is 65.59% to 34.41%
·    According to VLR data, India had 646.77 million active mobile subscribers in December 2011 compared with 529.22 million in December 2010, a growth of 22.21%
·    As a result, active mobile teledensity increased to 53.65% from 44.48% in the corresponding period
Maharashtra maintains its top position while U.P. (East) climbed up to become 2nd largest wireless telecom market in India ….
·    Maharashtra ended December 2011 with 53.55 million active mobile subscribers to keep its top position. During last twelve months, active mobile subscriber base of Maharashtra increased by 21.43%
·    U.P. (East) is the 2nd largest market with 52.73 million active mobile subscribers, growth of 27.62%
·    Andhra Pradesh (49.71 million), Tami Nadu (48.61 million) and Bihar (43.53 million) are part of top 5 wireless telecom markets in India at the end of December 2011
·    In terms of proportion active subscriber base to the total mobile subscriber base, J&K leads with 83.11% followed by Madhya Pradesh (78.45%) and Maharashtra (78.06%)
·    While Mumbai ranked at the bottom with 60.79% followed by Tamil Nadu (64.17%) and Kolkata (66.27%)
·    Madhya Pradesh is the fastest growing mobile telecom market in India with 29.89% growth rate followed by U.P. (West) with 29.04% and Orissa (28.64%)
·    While Tamil Nadu with a growth rate of 13.49% is slowest growing market followed by Kerala (14.78%) and J&K (16.56%)

Bharti Airtel remains at the top while Idea overtook Reliance to become No.3 mobile telecom operator in India ….
·    Bharti Airtel has maintained its leadership position with 24.4% market share in India
·    Idea has largest proportion of active mobile users at 92.98%
·    Top 5 players in Indian wireless telecom industry accounts for 82.4% market share in terms of active subscriber base
·    Idea with 15.3% share of active subscriber base displaced Reliance (15.0%) to become No. 3 player while Vodafone with 19.4% share is at the 2nd position

·    Uninor is the fastest growing mobile telecom operator with growth rate of 159.21%  during last twelve months
·    While Idea (34.33%) and Vodafone (33.04%) posted impressive growth rates
·    Notably, market leader Bharti Airtel grew at 12.96% which considerably lower than overall market growth of 22.21%
·    Tata, which experienced negative growth of 0.88% in its total subscriber base posted 12.72% growth in active subscriber base due to higher proportion VLR
