Slower growth rate coupled with lesser active users makes Kolkata difficult market for players …
·         Mobile subscriber base of Kolkata increased by 7.65% during FY2012 to reach 24.99 million, 2nd  slowest in the country
·         Active wireless subscriber base in Kolkata is 67.76% resulting in 16.93 million active mobile users. Kolkata has one of least proportion of active mobile users in India
·         Active subscriber base in Kolkata increased by 15.24% during FY2012 compared with national average of 19.00%
·         By March 2012, Kolkata is 17th largest wireless telecom market in India accounting for 2.48% of total active subscriber base, slipped from 16th position during FY2011
·         By March 2012, Kolkata registered 871,537 Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests, resulting into churn rate of 3.49%

Reliance grabs pole position from Vodafone while Bharti inches closer ….
·         In Kolkata wireless telecom market, Reliance leads with 21.1% share in terms of total subscriber base followed by Vodafone (17.3%), Bharti (15.5%), Tata (12.3%) and BSNL (9.7%)
·         In Kolkata, 85.1% of Vodafone’s mobile subscribers are active compared with 70.2% for Reliance and 86.0% for Airtel
·         In terms of active subscriber base, Reliance emerges as market leader with 21.9% market share followed by Vodafone (21.7%) and Bharti (19.6%)
·         Although, Reliance has manage to remain at the top, both Vodafone and Bharti are better placed to due higher percentage of active users
·         Notably, BSNL which has just 4.8% active users share is 7th reflecting its inability to serve “Metros” effectively
·         Top 5 players accounts for 81.7% of Kolkata’s active mobile subscriber base
