News - Telecom: Bharti Infratel teamed up with OMC Power to electrify telecom towers in rural areas with renewable energy

About 9,000 towers located in off-grid / poor grid areas would be electrified using Micropower plants …
·         Bharti Infratel, the infrastructure arm of Bharti Airtel signed up an agreement with “OMC Power” (provider of Micropower plants based on renewable energy) to electrify its telecom towers situated in rural areas
·         As a part of its “Green Tower P7” initiative Bharti Infratel would electrify 9,000 of its telecom towers situated in off-grid / poor grid areas using renewable energy
·         Implementation of the 10-year agreement  would begin from first micro power plant in Uttar Pradesh which OMC has already built and had taken successful trials
·         As a result, Bharti Infratel is planning to reduce its dependence on diesel to powered its telecom tower as well as slash its carbon footprints
·         Currently in India there are 4,00,000 total telecom tower sites out of which about 70,000 are not connected to grid power and mainly uses diesel for electrification
·         Total diesel spend by telecom tower companies in India is estimated at Rs.8,500 which could come down significantly with rising adoption level of renewable energy such as wind and solar
