India Wireless Telecom Market: June 2014

U.P. (East) is the largest mobile telecom market in India while Airtel is a strong market leader

India’s active mobile subscriber base increased to 795.59 million in June 2014 …

·       Indian wireless telecom market ends June 2014 with subscriber base of 914.92 million, addition of 4.77 million, monthly growth rate of 0.52%
·       Overall mobile teledensity stands at 73.55% (Urban:  140.44%, Rural: 43.82%)
·       Urban to rural subscriber ratio is 58.76% to 41.24%
·       Rural market expanded by 1.14 million mobile subscribers at a monthly growth rate of
0.30% while urban subscriber base increased 3.63 million, growth of 0.68%
·       According to VLR data, India had 795.58 million active mobile subscribers. Hence, actual wireless teledensity in India is 86.96% by June 2014
·       In June 2014, about 2.39 million subscribers submitted Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests which is about 0.26% of total mobile subscriber base in India

Bharti Airtel leads with 24.9% share as market ….

·       Bharti Airtel maintains its leadership position with 24.9% market share in India
·       Idea has largest proportion of active mobile users at 101.38% followed by Reliance (98.55%) and Airtel (94.73%)
·       State-owned BSNL+MTNL with only 63.18% of active mobile subscriber base is certainly struggling in highly competitive and dynamic market environment raising lot of concerns about their future
·       While Tata (69.37%) and Aircel (64.63%) are way behind leading pack in terms of active user proportion raising doubts about long term sustainability of their business model
·       Top 5 players in Indian wireless telecom industry accounts for 83.6% market share in terms of active subscriber base

U.P. (East) leads the market while Maharashtra is close second …

·       U.P. (East) with 68.17 million active mobile users is leading followed by Maharashtra with 67.39 million active mobile subscribers
·       With 92.62% of active subscribers, Maharashtra is the most active circle while Tamil Nadu with 74.84% active users is least active
·       Andhra Pradesh (58.44 million) is third followed by Tamil Nadu (57.23 million) at fourth. Bihar with 56.91 million active mobile subscribers is the 5th largest market wireless telecom market in India
·       During June 2014, West Bengal (871,239) added highest number of wireless subscribers followed by U.P. (East) 618,257 and Gujarat (575,819) while Punjab lost 1,005,292 subscribers making it worst performing circle during June 2014
