North eastern state of Manipur
witnessed strong fight between BJP and Congress. BJP did well by winning 21 seats
out of 60 in Manipur which has been historically dominated by Congress over the
years. Notably, BJP won highest percentage of votes at 36.3% indicating
impressiveness of its performance. However, Congress still manage to become
single largest party with 28 seats which is just 3 short of majority mark to
retain the power.
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh
again led from the front to continue dominance of Congress. He would become CM
of Manipur for 4th consecutive time if he manages to cross majority mark. All
India Trinmool Congress which got 1 seat may extend its support to Congress
taking the tally to 29!
BJP on the other hand became important
factor in Manipur thanks to increased focus of Narendra Modi led government on
North East. Also, many important leaders from Congress switched sides to BJP in
last 2 years. BJP is also trying to get majority mark so that it can get CM’s
post first time in Manipur. Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP already announced that its
one MLA would support BJP. Also, Naga Peoples Front (NPF) who won 4 seats is an
BJP ally in Nagaland and would support Saffron party in Manipur as well. As a
result, BJP has total tally of 26 MLAs in Manipur.
National
People's Party (NPP) is the king maker in Manipur as it has 4 MLAs which
can decide the fate of power. NPP founded by P.A. Sangma is most likely to help
BJP as it is a part of National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Thus tally of BJP
can touch 30 with one independent MLA Ashab Uddin from Jiribam becoming
precious!
Whoever
may form the government in Manipur; trend is certainly helping BJP to improve
its presence in the North East region. People of Manipur would certainly hope
for peace and prosperity in coming years to improve their lives.
