In July 2017, Indian aviation industry is witnessed robust growth
of air passenger traffic domestically. In the month of July 2017, number of air
passengers increased by 12.43% year on year to 95.65 Lakhs. While total number
of passengers carried during 2017 were up by 17.18% y-o-y to 657.21 Lakhs.
India’s aviation industry is benefiting from factors such as focused by
government to boost regional connectivity coupled with increase in domestic air
travelers.
India’s largest Low Cost Airline (LCC), IndiGo continues to
dominate with 38.7% market share. IndiGo carried 36.99 Lakhs passengers during July
2017. While Jet Airways (Jet +Jet Lite) 17.37 Lakhs passenger to capture 18.2%
share. Spice Jet is at third position with 14.2% market share while national
carrier Air India is at 4th with 13.5% share. Top 5 airlines
accounts for 92.3% of total market share in Indian aviation sector.
In terms of Passenger Load Factor (PLF), another LCC Spice Jet
leads with 94.4% followed by Air Asia (88.4%), Vistara (84.6%), IndiGo (83.7%) and
GoAir (82.5%).
On Time Performance (OTP) is one of important factor for
passengers deciding about which airline to fly. IndigGo is the most punctual
with 84.6% OTP followed by Go Air (78.2%) and Vistara (74.5%). About 66% of
delays are Reactionary in nature during July 2017 while ATC and Airport
management caused 16% of flight delays. Cancellation rates during July 2017
stood at 0.79%.
